Summary

Evaluating units of analysis in behavior analytic research is crucial. A new method, combining percentage correct with competent performance coding and a task analysis grid, meets all four criteria for appropriate measurement.

Area of Science:

  • Behavior Analysis
  • Research Methodology

Background:

  • Task-analytic research in behavior analysis often uses

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and discuss criteria for evaluating units of analysis in task-analytic research.
  • To propose and evaluate alternative units of analysis.
  • To identify the most appropriate unit of analysis for behavior analytic research.

Main Methods:

  • Developed four criteria for evaluating units of analysis.
  • Evaluated six potential units of analysis, including the commonly used "percentage correct."
  • Proposed and assessed five alternative units of analysis.

Main Results:

  • The commonly used "percentage correct" metric met only one of the four established criteria.
  • Five alternative units of analysis were evaluated.
  • Only "percentage correct with competent performance coded and a task analysis grid" met all four criteria.

Conclusions:

  • The "percentage correct" metric is insufficient for rigorous task-analytic research.
  • A comprehensive approach combining performance coding and a task analysis grid offers a more appropriate unit of analysis.
  • This enhanced metric improves the evaluation of behavior analytic interventions.
