Abstract:
What are the contributing factors to the process of scapegoating among nurses and how can nurse executives identify and reverse this process? The author describes several factors that contribute to this phenomenon, the interaction of these factors, and some of the functions that scapegoating serves. Signs of scapegoating in an organization are described. Strategies for reversing this process are discussed both from the perspective of the scapegoat and the scapegoaters. Ways that nurses in leadership positions can prevent this practice are proposed.
