Abstract:
Retraction: "Protective effects of microRNA-330 on amyloid β-protein production, oxidative stress, and mitochondrial dysfunction in Alzheimer's disease by targeting VAV1 via the MAPK signaling pathway," by Ying Zhou, Zhou-Fan Wang, Wei Li, Hui Hong, Juan Chen, Yi Tian, Zhao-Yun Liu, J Cell Biochem. 2018; 5437-5448: The above article, published online on 25 January 2018 in Wiley Online Library (https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/jcb.26700) has been retracted by agreement between the journal's Editor in Chief, Prof. Dr. Christian Behl, and Wiley Periodicals LLC. The retraction has been agreed following an investigation based on allegations raised by a third party. A detailed investigation revealed that several image elements of the experimental data were published elsewhere in a different scientific context. Thus, the editors consider the conclusions of this article to be invalid.
Insights
This study on Alzheimer's disease is retracted due to data duplication concerns. The original findings regarding microRNA-330's protective effects are now considered invalid.
Area of Science:
- Neuroscience
- Molecular Biology
- Genetics
Context:
- Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by amyloid-beta protein accumulation, oxidative stress, and mitochondrial dysfunction.
- MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small non-coding RNAs that play critical roles in gene regulation and have emerged as potential therapeutic targets in various diseases, including AD.
Purpose:
- To investigate the protective effects of microRNA-330 (miR-330) on amyloid-beta protein production, oxidative stress, and mitochondrial dysfunction in Alzheimer's disease.
- To elucidate the underlying molecular mechanisms, specifically the targeting of VAV1 (a guanine nucleotide exchange factor) via the MAPK signaling pathway.
Summary:
- The article explored how miR-330 might mitigate AD pathology by influencing amyloid-beta production, oxidative stress, and mitochondrial health.
- It proposed that miR-330 exerts these effects by targeting VAV1 and modulating the MAPK signaling pathway.
Impact:
- The article has been retracted due to serious concerns regarding the integrity of the published experimental data.
- Specifically, image elements were found to be duplicated in different scientific contexts, invalidating the study's conclusions and its potential impact on Alzheimer's disease research and therapeutic strategies.

Somatic Spinal Reflexes
One of the most well-known somatic spinal reflexes is the stretch reflex, which is activated by the sudden stretching of a muscle. This reflex involves the activation of specialized sensory receptors called muscle spindles, which are located in the muscle tissue and detect changes in the length and speed of muscle contractions. When a muscle is suddenly...

Relaxation of Skeletal Muscles
When an action potential reaches the axon terminal, it depolarizes the membrane and opens voltage-gated sodium channels. Sodium ions enter the cell, further depolarizing the presynaptic membrane. This depolarization causes voltage-gated calcium channels to open....
