Summary

Fibronectin levels in amniotic fluid significantly decrease as pregnancy progresses. This finding suggests potential changes in fibronectin synthesis or dilution by fetal urine in later gestation.

Background:

Fibronectin is a glycoprotein involved in cell adhesion and immune clearance.
Amniotic fluid contains a unique, glycosylated form of fibronectin.
Amniotic fluid cells synthesize and secrete fibronectin.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the correlation between amniotic fluid fibronectin concentration and gestational age.

Main Methods:

Analysis of amniotic fluid samples from 54 women.
Gestation period ranged from 15 to 40 weeks.

Main Results:

A significant negative correlation (r = -0.70) was observed between fibronectin levels and gestational age.
Fibronectin concentration decreased as pregnancy advanced.
