Risk factors for recurrence after pilonidal sinus surgery in children and adolescents
1Department of Paediatric Surgery, Konya Health Application and Research Center, University of Health Sciences, Turkey.
Female gender and higher BMI are significant risk factors for pilonidal sinus disease (PSD) recurrence in pediatric patients after surgery. These factors increase the likelihood of the condition returning post-treatment.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Surgery
- Surgical Outcomes
- Pilonidal Sinus Disease
Background:
- Pilonidal sinus disease (PSD) involves hair in the sacrococcygeal region.
- Acquired PSD requires surgical intervention.
- Recurrence after surgery is a clinical challenge.
Purpose of the Study:
- To identify risk factors for pilonidal sinus disease recurrence in children and adolescents.
- To analyze factors influencing post-surgical outcomes in pediatric PSD patients.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective analysis of 86 pediatric patients undergoing PSD surgery.
- Data collected included age, gender, weight, and height.
- Factors associated with postoperative recurrence were examined.
Main Results:
- Postoperative recurrence observed in 16.3% of patients.
- Overweight patients had significantly higher recurrence rates (p < 0.001).
- Female patients showed significantly higher recurrence rates compared to males (p = 0.014).
- Female gender was a stronger predictor of recurrence than BMI.
Conclusions:
- Female gender and high Body Mass Index (BMI) are significant risk factors for PSD recurrence.
- These factors necessitate consideration in surgical planning and follow-up for pediatric PSD.
