This study optimizes inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) for ferromanganese (Fe-Mn) oxides. High-resolution mode is not needed for accurate rare earth element (REE) analysis in these materials.
Area of Science:
- Geochemistry
- Analytical Chemistry
- Marine Science
Background:
- Ferromanganese (Fe-Mn) oxides are crucial marine geological materials.
- Accurate trace element and Rare Earth Element (REE) analysis is vital for understanding their formation and history.
- Existing analytical procedures may lack optimization for Fe-Mn oxide matrices.
Purpose of the Study:
- To propose an optimal analytical procedure for ferromanganese (Fe-Mn) oxides using ICP-MS.
- To evaluate different data acquisition modes for trace element and REE determination.
- To provide accurate and precise analytical data for certified reference materials.
Main Methods:
- Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was employed.
- Chemical dissolution of eight Fe-Mn nodules and crusts.
- Investigation of isobaric interference correction using mono-elemental solutions and high-resolution mode.
- Addition of a thulium (Tm) spike for internal standardization.
Main Results:
- High-resolution ICP-MS acquisition mode was found to be unnecessary for high-quality REE data in Fe-Mn oxides.
- A revised analytical method was developed and validated.
- Consistent, precise, and accurate values were obtained for eight reference materials.
Conclusions:
- The developed analytical procedure offers an efficient and reliable method for REE determination in Fe-Mn oxides.
- The study provides validated data for important geological reference materials.
- Simplified ICP-MS data acquisition strategies are sufficient for accurate analysis of REE in complex matrices like Fe-Mn oxides.
