Bacterial Phylum Actinobacteria01:30

Bacterial Phylum Actinobacteria

223
Coryneform bacteria are gram-positive, aerobic, nonmotile rods that exhibit irregular, club-shaped, or V-shaped arrangements. Their V-shape results from snapping division, where the inner cell wall layer forms the cross-wall, while the outer layer remains intact until it ruptures on one side, causing the daughter cells to bend away. The primary genera are Corynebacterium and Arthrobacter. Corynebacterium includes diverse species, ranging from saprophytes to pathogens like Corynebacterium...

Bacterial Phylum Spirochaetes

232
Spirochetes, unique bacteria in the phylum Spirochaetes, are gram-negative, motile, tightly coiled, slender, and flexible. They inhabit aquatic sediments and animals, with some causing diseases like syphilis. Spirochetes are classified into eight genera based on habitat, pathogenicity, phylogeny, and characteristics.Their distinctive motility arises from endoflagella, located within the cell’s periplasm. These endoflagella anchor at the cell poles and extend along the cell length, encased...

Acute Pharyngitis01:30

Acute Pharyngitis

2.3K
Introduction
Acute pharyngitis is the inflammation of the back of the throat (pharynx), commonly resulting in a sore throat. It is a frequently encountered condition that prompts individuals to seek medical advice.
Classification
Acute pharyngitis can be categorized based on its underlying cause:

Tonsillitis I: Introduction01:30

Tonsillitis I: Introduction

795
Tonsillitis is inflammation of the tonsils, which are two lymphoid tissue masses at the back of the throat. This condition can cause discomfort and irritation in the throat.
Etiology
Three primary contributing factors have been identified.

Fungal Group Zygomycota01:29

Fungal Group Zygomycota

445
Zygomycota, previously classified as a distinct fungal group, are primarily terrestrial, saprophytic molds that play a crucial role as decomposers. Recent phylogenetic studies have revealed that these fungi are now divided into two major clades — Mucoromycota, which includes many symbiotic species, and Zoopagomycota, which primarily consists of parasitic and pathogenic fungi. These groups exhibit distinct ecological roles and reproductive strategies while sharing key structural and...

Bacterial Phylum Planctomycetes01:26

Bacterial Phylum Planctomycetes

174
Planctomycetes are a group of morphologically distinct bacteria predominantly classified into two orders: Planctomycetales and Brocadiales. These gram-negative bacteria exhibit unique features, including division by budding and the presence of stalks or appendages. Their cells are often found in rosette arrangements, and they are notable for possessing an S-layer in their cell envelope, which is relatively uncommon among bacteria. Additionally, Planctomycetes frequently exhibit intracellular...

Area of Science:

  • Microbiology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Neurology

Background:

  • Actinomyces spp. are common oral flora, typically associated with dental procedures and oral abscesses.
  • These gram-positive bacilli are part of the normal human microbiota in the oropharynx, gastrointestinal, and urogenital tracts.

Observation:

  • A case of meningitis and recurrent cervical abscess caused by Actinomyces odontolyticus was identified.
  • This specific presentation has not been previously documented in online medical literature.

Findings:

  • Actinomyces odontolyticus was confirmed as the causative agent of both meningitis and cervical abscess.
  • The infection originated from the oral cavity, leading to systemic translocation.

Implications:

  • This case expands the known clinical spectrum of Actinomyces odontolyticus infections.
  • Highlights the importance of considering oral translocation as a route for serious Actinomyces infections, including meningitis and deep neck abscesses.
