Summary

Metformin (MET) treatment demonstrated protective effects against varicocele-induced testicular damage in rats. MET administration reduced oxidative stress markers like malondialdehyde (MDA) and increased antioxidant enzyme activity, including superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx).

Background:

  • Varicocele, a common cause of male infertility, is associated with testicular oxidative stress and histopathological damage.
  • Metformin, a widely used antidiabetic drug, has shown potential antioxidant properties in various experimental models.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the therapeutic effects of metformin on testicular histopathology and antioxidant enzyme activity in a rat model of experimentally induced varicocele.
  • To evaluate the dose-dependent efficacy of metformin in mitigating varicocele-induced oxidative damage.

Main Methods:

  • Experimental varicocele was induced in rats, which were then treated with varying doses of metformin (25, 50, 100 mg/kg) or vehicle for 42 days.
  • Testicular tissue was analyzed for histopathological changes and levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) at 21 and 42 days.

Main Results:
