Abstract:
Retraction: "TPX2 gene silencing inhibits cell proliferation and promotes apoptosis through negative regulation of AKT signaling pathway in ovarian cancer," by Yuan Tian, Lian-Lian Liu, Dong-Mei Guo, Yan Wang, Wen-Hui Zha, Yang Li, Fu-Ju Wu, J Cell Biochem. 2018; 7540-7555: The above article, published online on 15 June 2018 in Wiley Online Library (https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/jcb.27065) has been retracted by agreement between the journal's Editor in Chief, Prof. Dr. Christian Behl, and Wiley Periodicals LLC. The retraction has been agreed following an investigation based on allegations raised by a third party. A detailed investigation revealed that several image elements of the experimental data were published elsewhere in a different scientific context. Thus, the editors consider the conclusions of this article to be invalid.
Insights
This study on ovarian cancer has been retracted due to duplicated image data. The original findings on TPX2 gene silencing and AKT signaling are now considered invalid.
Area of Science:
- Oncology
- Molecular Biology
- Cell Biology
Context:
- Ovarian cancer is a significant global health challenge.
- The AKT signaling pathway plays a crucial role in cell survival and proliferation.
- Targeting specific genes like TPX2 is a potential therapeutic strategy.
Purpose:
- To investigate the role of TPX2 gene silencing in ovarian cancer.
- To determine the effect of TPX2 on cell proliferation and apoptosis.
- To elucidate the mechanism involving the AKT signaling pathway.
Summary:
- The article investigated TPX2 gene silencing in ovarian cancer, proposing it inhibits proliferation and promotes apoptosis via AKT pathway downregulation.
- Allegations of duplicated experimental image data led to an investigation.
- The journal editors retracted the article after confirming image duplication in different contexts, invalidating the reported conclusions.
Impact:
- The retraction highlights the importance of data integrity and rigorous verification in scientific publishing.
- Invalidates previous findings on TPX2's role in ovarian cancer and its mechanism via AKT signaling.
- Underscores the need for vigilance against scientific misconduct to maintain research credibility.

Somatic Spinal Reflexes
One of the most well-known somatic spinal reflexes is the stretch reflex, which is activated by the sudden stretching of a muscle. This reflex involves the activation of specialized sensory receptors called muscle spindles, which are located in the muscle tissue and detect changes in the length and speed of muscle contractions. When a muscle is suddenly...

Relaxation of Skeletal Muscles
When an action potential reaches the axon terminal, it depolarizes the membrane and opens voltage-gated sodium channels. Sodium ions enter the cell, further depolarizing the presynaptic membrane. This depolarization causes voltage-gated calcium channels to open....
