Abstract:
Retraction: "Inhibition of Notch signaling pathway enhanced the radiosensitivity of breast cancer cells," by Jian-Heng Peng, Xiao-Lin Wang, Liang Ran, Jun-Long Song, Zhi-Ting Zhang, Xin Liu, Hong-Yuan Li, J Cell Biochem. 2018; 8398-8409: The above article, published online on 15 June 2018 in Wiley Online Library (https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/jcb.27036) has been retracted by agreement between the journal's Editor in Chief, Prof. Dr. Christian Behl, and Wiley Periodicals LLC. The retraction has been agreed following an investigation based on allegations raised by a third party. A detailed investigation revealed that several image elements of the experimental data were published elsewhere in a different scientific context. Thus, the editors consider the conclusions of this article to be invalid.
Insights
This study on breast cancer cells has been retracted due to invalid experimental data. The inhibition of the Notch signaling pathway's effect on radiosensitivity is therefore unsubstantiated.
Area of Science:
- Oncology
- Molecular Biology
- Cell Biology
Context:
- The study investigated the role of the Notch signaling pathway in breast cancer radiosensitivity.
- Allegations of data manipulation prompted an investigation into the published findings.
Purpose:
- To assess the impact of inhibiting the Notch signaling pathway on the radiosensitivity of breast cancer cells.
- To determine if Notch pathway inhibition could enhance the effectiveness of radiation therapy in breast cancer.
Summary:
- The article "Inhibition of Notch signaling pathway enhanced the radiosensitivity of breast cancer cells" has been retracted.
- The retraction was based on the discovery that experimental data images were used in other scientific contexts.
- The journal editors deemed the article's conclusions invalid due to these data integrity issues.
Impact:
- The retraction invalidates any conclusions drawn from the study regarding Notch signaling and breast cancer radiosensitivity.
- This case highlights the importance of rigorous data verification in scientific publishing.
- Researchers should be aware that the findings presented in this article are no longer considered valid.

Somatic Spinal Reflexes
One of the most well-known somatic spinal reflexes is the stretch reflex, which is activated by the sudden stretching of a muscle. This reflex involves the activation of specialized sensory receptors called muscle spindles, which are located in the muscle tissue and detect changes in the length and speed of muscle contractions. When a muscle is suddenly...

Relaxation of Skeletal Muscles
When an action potential reaches the axon terminal, it depolarizes the membrane and opens voltage-gated sodium channels. Sodium ions enter the cell, further depolarizing the presynaptic membrane. This depolarization causes voltage-gated calcium channels to open....
