Personality disorder in mental handicap.

Summary

Background:

Intellectual disability (ID) is often associated with co-occurring mental health conditions.
The prevalence and impact of personality disorders in adults with mild to moderate ID require further investigation.
Community placement and social integration for individuals with ID can be influenced by behavioral and personality factors.

Purpose of the Study:

To assess the prevalence of personality disorder features in a sample of adults with mild or moderate intellectual disability.
To explore the significance of personality problems in the community acceptability of individuals with intellectual disabilities.

Main Methods:

A cohort of 100 randomly selected adults with mild or moderate intellectual disability participated.
The Standardized Assessment of Personality (SAP) by Mann et al. (1981) was utilized for assessment.
Data analysis focused on identifying and quantifying features of abnormal personality.

Main Results:

56% of the participants exhibited features of abnormal personality.
A marked abnormality, suggestive of personality disorder, was identified in 22% of the sample.
The study indicates a substantial presence of personality-related issues within this population.

Conclusions:

Personality disorders appear to be a significant, often overlooked, comorbidity in adults with intellectual disabilities.
Addressing personality problems may be crucial for enhancing the successful community integration and social acceptance of individuals with ID.
Future research should focus on the clinical implications and management strategies for personality disorders in the ID population.
