Rational Emotive and Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (REBT) significantly improved patient functioning in a clinical setting. This psychotherapy approach demonstrated effectiveness after just three sessions and continued through twenty sessions.
Area of Science:
- Psychology
- Clinical Psychology
- Psychotherapy Research
Background:
- Rational Emotive and Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (REBT) is a well-established psychotherapeutic approach.
- Its effectiveness has been documented in research settings, but translation to clinical practice requires validation.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the effectiveness of REBT in a real-world clinical setting.
- To assess patient functioning improvements following REBT interventions.
Main Methods:
- A cohort of 349 patients from the Albert Ellis Institute undergoing psychotherapy between 2007 and 2016 were included.
- Intent-to-treat analyses were performed, measuring outcomes at three and twenty sessions using the Outcome Questionnaire-45.
Main Results:
- Patients demonstrated statistically significant improvements in functioning.
- A medium effect size was observed for early response after three sessions.
- Sustained improvements were noted by the end of twenty sessions.
Conclusions:
- REBT is effectively transferable from research environments to clinical practice.
- The findings support the utility of REBT for enhancing patient functioning in routine care.
