Summary

Photobiomodulation (PBM) combined with orthodontic molar intrusion may improve periodontal health and reduce root resorption. While not statistically significant, PBM showed promising trends in these areas during treatment.

Background:

  • Super-eruption of maxillary molars is a common issue in adults, impairing oral rehabilitation.
  • Adjunctive photobiomodulation (PBM) is increasingly researched for its benefits in orthodontic treatments.
  • Molar intrusion is a key procedure for correcting super-eruption and restoring occlusion.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To quantify the effects of combining photobiomodulation (PBM) with orthodontic molar intrusion.
  • To evaluate changes in periodontal parameters, intrusion distance, velocity, and root resorption.

Main Methods:

  • Twenty patients with maxillary first molar intrusion were randomized into control and PBM groups.
  • PBM was applied using a red laser diode (670 nm) at specific intervals.
  • Periodontal indices (PI, PD, BOP), intraoral scans, and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) were used for assessments.

Main Results:

  • No significant differences were found in periodontal parameters, intrusion distance, or velocity between groups.
  • The PBM group showed lower periodontal scores during the initial 3 months.
  • CBCT revealed less root resorption in the PBM group, though not statistically significant.

Conclusions:

  • Adjunctive PBM during orthodontic molar intrusion may offer improved periodontal outcomes and reduced root resorption.
  • These benefits may come at the cost of slightly reduced intrusion distance and velocity.
  • Both intraoral scanners and CBCT are effective for monitoring intrusion distance.
