Summary

This study found no significant difference in antithyroid antibodies between patients with major depressive disorder and the general population. Antibody presence did not correlate with thyroid dysfunction in these patients.

Area of Science:

  • Endocrinology
  • Psychiatry
  • Immunology

Background:

  • Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a prevalent psychiatric condition.
  • Thyroid dysfunction and autoimmune thyroid diseases are sometimes associated with mood disorders.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the prevalence of antithyroid antibodies in patients with unipolar major depressive disorder.
  • To determine if antithyroid antibodies correlate with thyroid function in this patient group.

Main Methods:

  • Measurement of antithyroid antibodies (antimicrosomal and antithyroglobulin) in 58 patients with unipolar MDD.
  • Assessment of thyroid function tests in the same patient cohort.
  • Comparison of antibody prevalence with normal subject data.

Main Results:

  • Five patients (approximately 8.6%) had detectable antithyroid antibodies.
  • The prevalence of antithyroid antibodies in MDD patients was similar to that in normal subjects.
  • No relationship was found between detectable antibody titers and abnormal thyroid function tests.

Conclusions:

  • Antithyroid antibodies do not appear to be a significant factor in unipolar major depressive disorder.
  • The findings suggest that autoimmune thyroid disease is not a common comorbidity in this patient population.
  • Further research may explore other potential immunological links in depression.
