Relative Risk01:12

Relative Risk

587
Relative risk (RR) is a statistical measure commonly used in epidemiology to compare the likelihood of a particular event occurring between two groups. This metric is important for evaluating the relationship between exposure to a specific risk factor and the probability of a particular outcome. It plays a crucial role in medical research, public health studies, and risk assessment. Relative risk quantifies how much more (or less) likely an event is to occur in an exposed group compared to an...

Panic Disorder01:27

Panic Disorder

248
Panic disorder is an anxiety disorder characterized by recurrent and sudden minutes-long episodes of intense fear, known as panic attacks. These attacks may feel like heart attacks and often happen without warning or a specific cause. They can include symptoms such as rapid heart rate, shortness of breath, chest pain, trembling, sweating, dizziness, and a sense of helplessness. During a panic attack, individuals may feel as though they are experiencing a heart attack or are in a...

Dark Triad and Person Perception01:29

Dark Triad and Person Perception

45
Person perception is influenced by both external behaviors and the observer’s internal characteristics, including personality traits. Individuals with dark personality traits, comprising psychopathy, Machiavellianism, and narcissism — collectively known as the dark triad – exhibit manipulative and exploitative tendencies in social contexts. These traits affect how they perceive others and how they are perceived. The Role of Dark Personality Traits in Person PerceptionBlack et...

Assessment of the Gastrointestinal System II: Health Perception Pattern

220
Assessing the gastrointestinal (GI) system is a complex process that begins with collecting subjective data. This data, collected through patient interviews, provides crucial insights into the patient's health history, perception patterns, and lifestyle habits, all contributing significantly to GI health.
Health Perception Patterns
Health perception patterns offer valuable insights into a patient's lifestyle habits and how they may impact their GI health. These patterns include:

Self-Report Tests of Personality01:22

Self-Report Tests of Personality

509
Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.

Sensitivity, Specificity, and Predicted Value01:13

Sensitivity, Specificity, and Predicted Value

860
In healthcare diagnostics, laboratory tests play a crucial role in identifying and diagnosing a wide range of medical conditions. However, interpreting test results is not always straightforward. An abnormal test result does not always confirm the presence of a disease, just as a normal result does not guarantee its absence. To assess the reliability of these diagnostic tools, healthcare practitioners rely on two key statistical indicators: sensitivity and specificity.
Sensitivity is the...

Summary

We developed a Pandemic Risk Perception Scale to measure COVID-19 concerns. Findings show Alimentary, Health System, and Emotional Health Risks significantly impact perception, while Infection Risk has a minor effect.

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Public Health
  • Sociology

Background:

  • Understanding public perception of pandemic risks is crucial for effective health communication and policy.
  • Previous research often treated risk perception monolithically, lacking nuanced dimensional analysis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To propose and validate a multidimensional scale for assessing pandemic risk perception.
  • To identify the key dimensions influencing risk perception during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Main Methods:

  • Development of the Pandemic Risk Perception Scale with two constructs: Dread Risk and Personal Exposure.
  • Utilized multidimensional item response theory, confirmatory factor analysis, and structural equation modeling.
  • Data collected from two independent respondent samples.

Main Results:

  • The scale's dimensions include Infection Risk, Emotional Health Risk, Health System Risk, Financial Risk, and Alimentary Risk.
  • Alimentary Risk, Health System Risk, and Emotional Health Risk emerged as the primary dimensions of COVID-19 risk perception.
  • Infection Risk demonstrated a minor influence on overall pandemic risk perception.

Conclusions:

  • The proposed Pandemic Risk Perception Scale effectively captures nuanced aspects of public concern.
  • Emotional Health, Health System, and Alimentary Risks are critical drivers of pandemic risk perception.
  • Distinct dynamics exist between personal and general risk perceptions during pandemics, with infection risk playing a lesser role.
