Summary

Red cell distribution width (RDW) changes after atrial fibrillation (AF) ablation predict procedure success. A decrease in RDW post-ablation is linked to better outcomes, while no significant change suggests recurrence risk.

Background:

  • Red cell distribution width (RDW) is an indicator of erythrocyte size variation.
  • Elevated RDW has been associated with cardiovascular diseases, including atrial fibrillation (AF).
  • The role of RDW in predicting the success of AF catheter ablation remains unclear.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between RDW values and the outcomes of catheter ablation for AF.
  • To determine if changes in RDW after ablation correlate with AF recurrence.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective multicenter study of 501 AF patients undergoing initial ablation.
  • RDW levels measured pre-ablation and 1-3 months post-ablation.
  • Patients stratified into AF recurrence and no-recurrence groups within 1 year.

Main Results:

  • No significant difference in pre-ablation RDW between groups.
  • RDW decreased significantly in the no-recurrence group post-ablation (p < 0.001).
  • Postoperative change in RDW (ΔRDW) independently predicted AF recurrence (HR 2.00, p < 0.001).

Conclusions:

  • A decrease in RDW after AF ablation is an independent predictor of 1-year procedural success.
  • Monitoring RDW changes may help identify patients at higher risk of AF recurrence post-ablation.
