Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the prevalence of perceived harassment among female surgeons.
  • To understand harassment as a factor contributing to difficulties and negative emotions in surgical practice.

Main Methods:

  • A quantitative and qualitative study using Google Forms® questionnaires distributed to women surgeons in Brazil.
  • Data collected from 232 respondents, with qualitative analysis via Wordle®.

Main Results:

  • Nearly half (49.1%) of respondents perceived harassment during surgical training.
  • Perceived harassment correlated with differential treatment (77.2% vs 47.5%) and altered training experiences (56.1%).
  • Female surgeons experiencing harassment reported significantly higher rates of physical and emotional threats.

Conclusions:

  • Female surgeons report substantial moral and sexual harassment.
  • This harassment negatively impacts their overall feelings and experiences within the surgical specialty.
