Cancer-Critical Genes II: Tumor Suppressor Genes

8.4K
Genes usually encode proteins necessary for the proper functioning of a healthy cell. Mutations can often cause changes to the gene expression pattern, thereby altering the phenotype.
When the function of certain critical genes, especially those involved in cell cycle regulation and cell growth signaling cascades, gets disrupted, it upsets the cell cycle progression. Such cells with unchecked cell cycles start proliferating uncontrollably and eventually develop into tumors.
Such genes that act...

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Urology

Background:

  • Germ-cell cancer (GCC) affects approximately 420 men annually in Switzerland.
  • Management guidelines exist but many aspects of individualized treatment remain controversial.
  • Balancing overtreatment to avoid toxicity and treatment intensification for adverse factors is crucial.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To harmonize management concepts for GCC patients in Switzerland.
  • To suggest optimal strategies for GCC treatment based on expert consensus.
  • To address controversial issues in GCC management through expert voting.

Main Methods:

  • A consensus meeting of Swiss experts was held virtually during the Swiss Oncology and Haematology Congress (SOHC) in 2020.
  • Expert strategies for GCC management were discussed.
  • Votes on controversial issues were obtained and presented.

Main Results:

  • Swiss experts discussed and aimed to harmonize GCC management strategies.
  • Optimal strategies for individual patient treatment were proposed.
  • Consensus was reached on several controversial aspects of GCC care.

Conclusions:

  • Personalized treatment is essential for germ-cell cancer (GCC) patients.
  • Referral to expert centers or second opinions is strongly recommended.
  • Harmonized strategies can optimize GCC management and reduce long-term toxicities.
