Long-term intake of beta-lactolin, a dairy peptide, may prevent cognitive decline in aging populations. This study shows beta-lactolin alleviates memory impairment and reduces brain inflammation in aged mice.
Area of Science:
- Neuroscience
- Gerontology
- Nutritional Science
Background:
- Global aging populations necessitate strategies for age-related cognitive decline and dementia.
- Dairy consumption is linked to reduced dementia risk in the elderly.
- Previous studies showed beta-lactolin improves cognitive function in older adults.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the long-term effects of beta-lactolin on aging-related cognitive decline.
- To determine if beta-lactolin can prevent neural inflammation and memory impairment in aged mice.
Main Methods:
- Aged mice (20 months) were fed beta-lactolin for 3 months.
- Cognitive function was assessed using the novel object recognition test.
- Neural inflammation markers (microglia, cytokines) and hippocampal atrophy were analyzed.
Main Results:
- Beta-lactolin consumption alleviated memory impairment and normalized activity cycles in aged mice.
- It reduced activated microglia, pro-inflammatory cytokines, and hippocampal atrophy.
- Beta-lactolin also decreased cytochrome c levels in the hippocampus and cortex.
Conclusions:
- Beta-lactolin consumption prevents neural inflammation associated with aging.
- It effectively alleviates age-related cognitive decline and memory impairment.
- Beta-lactolin shows potential as a therapeutic intervention for cognitive aging.
