Summary

Cancer survivors commonly use self-care for chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) but popular methods aren't most effective. Further research is needed for highly rated activities to manage CIPN symptoms.

  • Self-care strategies are frequently employed by survivors to alleviate CIPN symptoms, particularly in the feet.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the reported use of various self-care activities among cancer survivors experiencing CIPN.
  • To assess the perceived effectiveness of these self-care activities in managing CIPN symptoms.
  • To identify factors influencing the use and effectiveness of self-care strategies for foot-related CIPN.

Main Methods:

  • A questionnaire was administered to 405 cancer survivors diagnosed with CIPN.
  • Participants reported the use and perceived effectiveness (0-10 scale) of 25 distinct self-care activities.
  • Descriptive statistics and regression analyses were performed to correlate demographics, clinical data, and pain characteristics with self-care utilization and perceived efficacy.

Main Results:

  • The most frequently reported self-care activities included walking (73.8%), watching television (67.8%), reading (64.4%), listening to music/radio (60.0%), and exercising (58.6%).
  • Activities perceived as most effective were trigger point injections (8.3/10), tranquilizers (4.8/10), ultrasonic stimulation (4.3/10), heating pads (4.3/10), and TENS units (4.2/10).
  • Demographic, clinical, and pain characteristics were found to influence the use and perceived effectiveness of self-care activities to varying extents.

Conclusions:

  • A significant majority of cancer survivors (two-thirds) utilize at least seven self-care activities for CIPN management.
  • Commonly used self-care strategies for CIPN did not yield the highest reported effectiveness ratings.
  • Highly effective self-care activities identified in this study warrant further rigorous investigation and clinical evaluation for CIPN symptom management.
