Summary
The PODOSmart® smart insole offers a valid and affordable method for real-world gait analysis. This portable tool accurately measures walking profiles and gait variables, comparing favorably to laboratory-based systems.
Area of Science:
- Biomechanics
- Wearable Technology
- Gait Analysis
Background:
- Traditional gait analysis relies on expensive, laboratory-based equipment.
- There is a need for portable, cost-effective tools for real-life gait assessment.
Purpose of the Study:
- To introduce and characterize the PODOSmart® smart insole system.
- To validate the PODOSmart® system against a gold-standard stereophotogrammetry system (Vicon).
Main Methods:
- PODOSmart® insoles with wireless sensors were fitted into shoes.
- Spatial, temporal, and kinematic gait parameters were measured during walking.
- Validation involved comparing PODOSmart® data with Vicon system data in 11 healthy individuals.
Main Results:
- Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) for gait parameters ranged from 0.313 to 0.990.
- High ICC values were observed for cadence, circumduction, walking speed, stride length, and stride duration.
- PODOSmart® demonstrated strong agreement with the Vicon system for key gait parameters.
Conclusions:
- PODOSmart® is a valid and reliable tool for gait analysis in real-life conditions.
- Its portability and affordability make it suitable for both healthy and pathological populations.
- This technology offers a novel approach to accessible gait assessment.
