Selective tiered optimization (STO) improved satisfaction for pharmacy students and preceptors in advanced pharmacy practice experiences (APPEs). This process effectively eased competition for APPE sites, benefiting both students and educational institutions.
Area of Science:
- Pharmacy Education
- Experiential Learning
- Healthcare Administration
Background:
- Securing advanced pharmacy practice experiences (APPEs) is increasingly challenging for pharmacy schools due to limited sites.
- The University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy (UMSOP) implemented Selective Tiered Optimization (STO) in 2015 to address APPE site allocation challenges.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate student and preceptor satisfaction with the Selective Tiered Optimization (STO) process.
- To assess the perceived utility, fairness, and overall value of STO in managing competitive APPE placements.
Main Methods:
- Electronic surveys were distributed to UMSOP students and APPE preceptors from 2016 to 2019.
- Surveys assessed satisfaction with STO's process, objectives, usefulness, and equity.
Main Results:
- A total of 63 preceptors (42% response rate) and 70 students (22% response rate) responded.
- Both students and preceptors reported high satisfaction and perceived value in STO, finding benefits outweighed the effort.
- Preceptors noted higher quality, focus, and motivation in students participating in STO.
Conclusions:
- The STO process was well-received, perceived as fair and worthwhile by preceptors.
- STO effectively alleviates challenges associated with competitive APPE selection processes.
- Pharmacy schools should consider adopting STO to manage APPE site allocation.
