Factors Affecting Perception01:25

Factors Affecting Perception

2.1K
Perception is influenced by perceptual set, context, motivation, and emotion. Perceptual set, or perceptual expectancy, refers to the tendency to perceive things in a particular way, influenced by previous experiences and expectations. This phenomenon affects the interpretation of stimuli, creating a set of mental tendencies and assumptions that impact sensory perceptions of sound, taste, touch, and sight.
An illustrative example of a perceptual set is the scenario where an airline pilot told...

Assessment of the Gastrointestinal System II: Health Perception Pattern

201
Assessing the gastrointestinal (GI) system is a complex process that begins with collecting subjective data. This data, collected through patient interviews, provides crucial insights into the patient's health history, perception patterns, and lifestyle habits, all contributing significantly to GI health.
Health Perception Patterns
Health perception patterns offer valuable insights into a patient's lifestyle habits and how they may impact their GI health. These patterns include:

Confirmation Biases01:31

Confirmation Biases

7.4K
The confirmation bias is the tendency to focus on information that confirms our existing beliefs and ignore information that is inconsistent with our expectations. For example, if you think that your professor is not very nice, you notice all of the instances of rude behavior exhibited by the professor while ignoring the countless pleasant interactions he is involved in on a daily basis. Have you ever fallen prey to the confirmation bias, either as the source or target of such bias?

Dark Triad and Person Perception01:29

Dark Triad and Person Perception

34
Person perception is influenced by both external behaviors and the observer’s internal characteristics, including personality traits. Individuals with dark personality traits, comprising psychopathy, Machiavellianism, and narcissism — collectively known as the dark triad – exhibit manipulative and exploitative tendencies in social contexts. These traits affect how they perceive others and how they are perceived. The Role of Dark Personality Traits in Person PerceptionBlack et...

Taste Buds and Receptors

Gustation, or the sense of taste, is intrinsically linked to the anatomical structures located on the tongue. This organ's surface, along with the entirety of the oral cavity, is adorned with stratified squamous epithelium. Evident on the tongue are elevated structures known as papillae (singular = papilla), which house the mechanisms for the transduction of gustatory stimuli. Four distinct types of papillae exist, each identified by their unique morphological attributes: the circumvallate,...

Self-Schemas02:16

Self-Schemas

33.4K
In general, a schema is a mental construct consisting of a cluster or collection of related concepts (Bartlett, 1932). There are many different types of schemata, and they all have one thing in common: schemata are a method of organizing information that allows the brain to work more efficiently. When a schema is activated, the brain makes immediate assumptions about the person or object being observed.

Summary

Individuals perceive regular organic food consumers as more honest, agreeable, conscientious, and open. This organic halo effect extends to personality trait inferences, even showing increased narcissism judgments.

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Consumer Behavior
  • Social Cognition

Background:

  • The organic halo effect traditionally links organic food with positive attributes like lower calories.
  • This phenomenon has not been extensively studied concerning personality trait inferences of organic food consumers.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if describing individuals as regular organic food consumers influences perceptions of their personality traits.
  • To determine if the organic halo effect extends to basic personality traits and the Dark Triads.

Main Methods:

  • Two studies were conducted involving participants (N=608 and N=214) who evaluated hypothetical individuals based on their organic food consumption habits.
  • Manipulations included frequency of organic food consumption, consumer gender, and food type (organic vs. conventional).

  • Personality traits assessed included the Big Six traits and the Dark Triads.
  • Main Results:

    • Regular organic food consumers were perceived as more honest, agreeable, conscientious, and open.
    • Organic consumers were also judged as more narcissistic, suggesting a complex halo effect.
    • The organic halo effect was stronger for individuals who frequently consume organic food.

    Conclusions:

    • The organic halo effect significantly influences personality trait inferences about organic food consumers.
    • While positive valence contributes, it doesn't fully explain the specific and extensive nature of these trait inferences.
    • Findings highlight the psychological associations consumers form beyond the perceived health benefits of organic foods.
