Abstract:
The physiologic factors governing oxygen delivery to the peripheral tissues are briefly reviewed to show how tissue PO2 is defended when acute lung injury causes arterial hypoxemia. A loss of recruitable capillary reserve in the tissues may be another serious consequence of the same events that cause lung injury in the adult respiratory distress syndrome, and may cause a defect in tissue oxygen extraction.
