Summary

Postoperative hemoglobin checks in elderly hip fracture patients are best performed on the first day after surgery. This timing provides a more accurate reflection of hemoglobin drop compared to checks on the day of surgery.

Background:

  • Hip fractures are common in the elderly, often leading to significant blood loss.
  • Accurate monitoring of hemoglobin levels is crucial for managing these patients postoperatively.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze the effect of postoperative hemoglobin check timing (day of surgery vs. 1 day postoperatively) in elderly hip fracture patients.
  • To determine the optimal timing for postoperative hemoglobin assessment in this population.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective study of 253 elderly hip fracture patients.
  • Data collected included demographics, fracture details, surgical information, hemoglobin levels (preoperative and postoperative), hemoglobin drop, timing of measurement, blood transfusion, length of stay, and 30-day mortality.

  • Estimating hemoglobin on the first postoperative day is recommended for better clinical assessment in elderly hip fracture patients.
