Self-Regulation01:25

Self-Regulation

40
Self-regulation, also known as self-control, encompasses a range of cognitive and behavioral processes that allow individuals to adjust their internal states and outward actions to align with socially acceptable norms and long-term goals. It plays a fundamental role in adaptive functioning, from resisting impulsive behaviors to persisting through challenging tasks. While its benefits are widely recognized, self-regulation is not limitless. Muraven and Baumeister's theory posits that...

Self-Schemas02:16

Self-Schemas

33.4K
In general, a schema is a mental construct consisting of a cluster or collection of related concepts (Bartlett, 1932). There are many different types of schemata, and they all have one thing in common: schemata are a method of organizing information that allows the brain to work more efficiently. When a schema is activated, the brain makes immediate assumptions about the person or object being observed.

Adopting a healthier lifestyle often requires overcoming significant challenges, but leveraging psychological, social, and cultural resources can facilitate meaningful change. Effective self-change hinges on understanding and applying key tools such as motivation and goal setting, which help sustain efforts toward long-term health benefits.

Introspection01:29

Introspection

36
Introspection, long upheld as a reliable route to self-knowledge, involves examining one's thoughts, emotions, and mental processes. It underpins many psychological practices, from mindfulness meditation to psychotherapy and self-help strategies. However, empirical evidence challenges the accuracy of introspection as a means of understanding oneself.Limitations of Introspective InsightSeminal work by Nisbett and Wilson demonstrated that individuals are frequently unaware of the true causes...

Self-Discrepancy Theory

18.5K
One influential perspective on what motivates people's behavior is detailed in Tory Higgin's self-discrepancy theory (Higgins, 1987). He proposed that people hold disagreeing internal representations of themselves that lead to different emotional states.

Self-Evaluation Maintenance Model01:29

Self-Evaluation Maintenance Model

55
The Self-Evaluation Maintenance (SEM) model offers a psychological framework to understand how individuals’ self-esteem is influenced by the achievements of others, particularly those with whom they share close personal bonds. The SEM model operates when personal rather than social identity guides individuals. Central to this model is the notion that individuals have an inherent desire to preserve a favorable self-image, which is continuously shaped by interpersonal comparisons and...

Area of Science:

  • Behavioral Science
  • Clinical Psychology
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Self-compassion, treating oneself kindly during distress, is a potential support for weight management.
  • Existing research suggests self-compassion may improve health behaviors, but its direct impact on weight management outcomes remains unclear.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically review the efficacy of self-compassion interventions in weight management.
  • To evaluate increases in self-compassion, improvements in eating, physical activity, and weight.
  • To assess the long-term sustainability of these benefits.

Main Methods:

  • A systematic review following PRISMA guidelines, searching multiple databases (Scopus, PsycINFO, Medline, PubMed, Embase).
  • Inclusion of studies measuring self-compassion and reporting weight management outcomes, excluding individuals with eating disorders.
  • Assessment of study quality using the American Dietetic Association's Quality Criteria Checklist.

Main Results:

  • Twenty studies met inclusion criteria, with 17 showing significant increases in self-compassion post-intervention.
  • Positive effects were observed for eating behaviors (15/18 studies), weight loss (6/11 studies), and physical activity (6/9 studies).
  • Most improvements were maintained at follow-up, with the exception of physical activity behaviors (1/7 studies).

Conclusions:

  • Self-compassion interventions demonstrate effectiveness in boosting self-compassion within weight management contexts.
  • Methodological limitations and uncertainty regarding long-term weight management outcome maintenance necessitate cautious interpretation.
  • There is potential for self-compassion interventions in weight management, with recommendations for improved future study designs.
