Abstract:
Melanotic schwannoma is an uncommon nerve sheath neoplasm. Only 10% of melanotic schwannoma are malignant whereas metastases from melanotic schwannoma are much less common. Hereby we present FDG PET/CT findings of recurrent left retroperitoneal melanotic schwannoma with widespread metastases in a 50-year-old man.
Insights
Melanotic schwannoma, a rare nerve tumor, can metastasize. This case highlights the utility of FDG PET/CT in detecting recurrent retroperitoneal melanotic schwannoma with widespread metastases.
Area of Science:
- Oncology
- Radiology
- Pathology
Background:
- Melanotic schwannoma is a rare nerve sheath neoplasm.
- Malignant transformation is uncommon (10%), and metastases are even rarer.
Observation:
- A 50-year-old man presented with recurrent left retroperitoneal melanotic schwannoma.
- Widespread metastatic disease was observed.
Findings:
- FDG PET/CT imaging revealed findings consistent with recurrent melanotic schwannoma.
- The imaging demonstrated extensive metastatic spread.
Implications:
- FDG PET/CT is a valuable tool for diagnosing and staging metastatic melanotic schwannoma.
- This case underscores the importance of considering metastatic potential even in rare neoplasms.
