Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectroscopy: Instrumentation01:26

Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectroscopy: Instrumentation

Inductively coupled plasma (ICP) is the common plasma source used in atomic emission spectroscopy (AES), a technique that detects and analyzes various elements in a sample. This method is often called inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES).
There are three main types of inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy  (ICP-AES) instruments: sequential, simultaneous multichannel, and Fourier transform instruments, with the latter being less commonly used.

Area of Science:

  • Materials Science
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Process Analytical Technology

Background:

  • Microencapsulation is crucial for drug delivery and controlled release.
  • Online monitoring of particle size distribution (PSD) during microencapsulation is challenging.
  • Continuous solvent evaporation is a common microencapsulation technique.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To implement and validate Focused Beam Reflectance Measurement (FBRM) for online, real-time particle size analysis in microencapsulation.
  • To investigate the influence of polymer type on microparticle characteristics.
  • To compare FBRM measurements with traditional methods like optical microscopy and laser diffraction.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized Focused Beam Reflectance Measurement (FBRM) for in-situ particle size and chord length distribution (CLD) monitoring.
  • Employed continuous solvent evaporation method for microcapsule production.
  • Correlated FBRM data with offline particle size analysis using optical microscopy and laser diffraction.

Main Results:

  • FBRM successfully provided online real-time particle size distribution (PSD) and chord length distribution (CLD) data during microparticle solidification.
  • Solidification times ranged from 10.5 to 55 minutes, depending on process conditions.
  • FBRM data indicated a correlation between larger mean particle size, longer CLD, and lower particle number peaks.
  • Polymer type significantly affected microparticle CLD and the solidification process.

Conclusions:

  • FBRM is a valuable tool for online, real-time monitoring of microencapsulation processes, offering insights not achievable with conventional methods.
  • Polymer selection is a critical factor influencing microparticle size and formation kinetics.
  • FBRM facilitates a deeper understanding of particle formation dynamics in continuous solvent evaporation.
