Exportin 5 (Exp5) binds precursor microRNAs (pre-miRNAs) with varying efficiencies, influenced by their 3' overhang and apical loop. Exp5 activity does not significantly alter miRNA expression in vivo, but preferential binding correlates with expression changes when Exp5 levels are reduced.
