Self-Report Tests of Personality01:22

Self-Report Tests of Personality

502
Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Adolescent Health
  • Trauma Prevention

Background:

  • The Prevent Alcohol and Risk-related Trauma in Youth (P.A.R.T.Y.) program aims to reduce adolescent trauma.
  • Previous research confirmed the program's efficacy, but lacked a validated, multi-domain questionnaire.
  • A need existed for a reliable instrument to measure risk-taking attitudes within the P.A.R.T.Y. program context.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To design and validate the P.A.R.T.Y. Program Questionnaire (PPQ).
  • To assess the PPQ's construct validity, criterion validity, and internal consistency.
  • To evaluate the PPQ's ability to risk-stratify adolescent participants.

Main Methods:

  • The PPQ was developed in consultation with field experts for engagement and sensitivity.
  • Exploratory factor analysis was used to examine construct validity.
  • The PPQ's internal consistency was assessed using Cronbach's alpha.
  • Criterion validity was evaluated by comparing PPQ risk stratification with the RT-18 instrument in 458 NSW students (aged 15-18).

Main Results:

  • Exploratory factor analysis revealed two underlying factors in the PPQ, aligning with its two-scenario format.
  • The PPQ demonstrated good internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = 0.77), with individual scenarios also showing consistency (α=0.69, α=0.66).
  • The PPQ effectively differentiated high-risk from low-risk participants, showing significant agreement with the RT-18 (p < 0.001), indicating criterion validity.

Conclusions:

  • The P.A.R.T.Y. Program Questionnaire (PPQ) is a valid and reliable tool for assessing risk-taking attitudes in adolescents.
  • The PPQ's ability to risk-stratify participants supports its utility in trauma prevention programs.
  • This validated questionnaire enhances the evaluation of interventions like the P.A.R.T.Y. program.
