Area of Science:

  • Medical Education
  • Surgical Training
  • Digital Health

Background:

  • The COVID-19 pandemic shifted surgical education to virtual platforms.
  • Learner engagement in online surgical education remains largely unquantified.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and validate a tool to measure learner engagement in virtual surgical education.
  • To assess learner engagement and educator perceptions in online surgical learning events.

Main Methods:

  • The Virtual In-Class Engagement Measure (VIEM) was developed based on the STROBE tool.
  • VIEM includes observer and self-assessment components.
  • Trained observers collected engagement data across two institutions, observing 839 learners in 22 virtual events.

Main Results:

  • The VIEM successfully differentiated between high and low engagement sessions.
  • 20% of learners exhibited "pretend participation."
  • Half of educators were comfortable with virtual teaching, with only one-third deeming it as effective as in-person instruction.

Conclusions:

  • Virtual platforms do not inherently increase learner engagement.
  • Standardized assessment tools like VIEM are crucial for evaluating engagement in virtual educational settings.
