Summary

Choroidal nevi can impair retinal sensitivity, as detected by microperimetry, even when visual acuity is good. However, multifocal electroretinography (mfERG) suggests that overall retinal function may remain largely intact.

  • Previous studies have primarily focused on structural changes, with limited data on functional deficits.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate retinal function in patients with choroidal nevus using advanced functional testing.
  • To correlate microperimetry and multifocal electroretinography (mfERG) findings with the presence of choroidal nevi.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective descriptive case series involving 7 patients with choroidal nevus.
  • Retinal sensitivity was assessed using microperimetry (MAIA) with standard and linear grids.
  • Multifocal electroretinography (mfERG) was performed according to ISCEV standards to evaluate retinal electrical responses.

Main Results:

  • All patients maintained good visual acuity (20/25 or better).
  • Microperimetry revealed significantly reduced retinal sensitivity over the choroidal nevus compared to unaffected areas (p < 0.001).
  • mfERG showed no significant focal changes in amplitude or implicit time corresponding to the nevus location.

  • Choroidal nevi can lead to localized deficits in retinal sensitivity, detectable by microperimetry.
  • Preserved mfERG responses suggest that the overall retinal function may be only partially compromised in the presence of choroidal nevi.
