A novel triple-layer high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) treatment effectively reduced submental fat in 62.5% of patients. This non-invasive method also improved patient satisfaction and skin rejuvenation with minimal side effects.
Area of Science:
- Aesthetics
- Dermatology
- Medical Devices
Background:
- Submental fat (SMF) is a common aesthetic concern.
- Current reduction methods are often invasive or lack robust evidence.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the safety and efficacy of a novel triple-layer high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) regimen for SMF reduction.
Main Methods:
- Forty Korean subjects with moderate to severe SMF received a single session of triple-layer HIFU treatment.
- Treatments utilized 3.0-, 4.5-, and 6.0-mm focusing transducers.
- Evaluations included the Clinician-Reported Submental Fat Rating Scale (CR-SMFRS), Subject Self-Rating Scale (SSRS), and 3D imaging at 8 weeks.
Main Results:
- 62.5% of subjects were classified as treatment responders (≥1-point improvement in CR-SMFRS).
- 67.5% of patients reported satisfaction with their facial and chin appearance (SSRS score ≥4).
- 3D imaging corroborated clinical findings, and observed side effects were mild and transient.
Conclusions:
- The triple-layer HIFU regimen, including a 6.0-mm transducer, offers benefits for submental fat reduction.
- This approach demonstrates efficacy in tightening and rejuvenating the submental area.
- The treatment shows a favorable safety profile for addressing unwanted submental fat.
