Design Example: Capacitance Multiplier Circuit01:20

Design Example: Capacitance Multiplier Circuit

1.0K
In integrated circuit technology, a capacitance multiplier is often utilized to produce a larger capacitance value when a small physical capacitance falls short. This is achieved by a circuit that multiplies capacitance values by a factor of up to 1000, such that a 10-pF capacitor can replicate the performance of a 100-nF capacitor.
The circuit illustrated in Figure 1 below incorporates two op-amps, with the first operating as a voltage follower and the second acting as an inverting amplifier.

Super-resolution Fluorescence Microscopy01:37

Super-resolution Fluorescence Microscopy

10.2K
Super-resolution fluorescence microscopy (SRFM) provides a better resolution than conventional fluorescence microscopy by reducing the point spread function (PSF). PSF is the light intensity distribution from a point that causes it to appear blurred. Due to PSF, each fluorescing point appears bigger than its actual size, and it is the PSF interference of nearby fluorophores that causes the blurred image. Various approaches to achieving higher resolution through SRFM have recently been...

Confocal Fluorescence Microscopy01:16

Confocal Fluorescence Microscopy

17.4K
Confocal microscopy is an advanced microscopic technique. The prime advantage of the confocal microscope over other microscopy techniques is its ability to block the out-of-focus light from the illuminated samples using pinholes. It is widely used with fluorescence optics to obtain high-resolution, sharp contrast images. Unlike optical microscopes, confocal microscopes use a focused beam of light laser to scan the entire sample surface at different z-planes. These microscopes are, therefore,...

IR Frequency Region: X–H Stretching01:24

IR Frequency Region: X–H Stretching

1.1K
In IR spectroscopy, signals produced by the X−H bonds (such as C−H, O−H, or N−H) can be observed in the frequency range of  2700–4000 cm–1. The C−H stretching vibration forms sharp bands in the region 2850–3000 cm–1. The presence of the O−H stretching vibration leads to the forming of an absorption band in the frequency range 3650–3200 cm−1. At the same time, N−H stretching can be confirmed by absorption bands in...

Phase Contrast and Differential Interference Contrast Microscopy

11.1K
Phase-Contrast Microscopes
In-phase-contrast microscopes, interference between light directly passing through a cell and light refracted by cellular components is used to create high-contrast, high-resolution images without staining. It is the oldest and simplest type of microscope that creates an image by altering the wavelengths of light rays passing through the specimen. Altered wavelength paths are created using an annular stop in the condenser. The annular stop produces a hollow cone of...

    Summary

A new superposed 64-quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) constellation improves visible light communication (VLC) systems using 2x2 multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO). This novel scheme reduces nonlinear distortion and enhances bit error rate (BER) performance.

    Area of Science:

    • Optoelectronics
    • Wireless Communication

    Background:

    • Visible Light Communication (VLC) systems increasingly use superposed constellations and spatial multiplexing Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) for multiplexing gains.
    • Channel correlation does not limit the effectiveness of these techniques in VLC.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To propose a novel superposed 64-quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) constellation scheme for 2x2 MIMO VLC systems.
    • To address light-emitting diode (LED) nonlinearity by introducing geometrically shaped 8QAM constellations to reduce the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR).

    Main Methods:

    • Developed a superposed 64QAM constellation by interleaving two geometrically shaped 8QAM constellations.
    • Ensured a power ratio of 1 between transmitted signals to minimize nonlinear distortion and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) deterioration.
    • Experimentally evaluated system performance under varying transmitted powers, direct current bias currents, and driving peak-to-peak voltages (Vpps).

    Main Results:

    • The proposed superposed 64QAM scheme demonstrated superior bit error rate (BER) performance compared to traditional schemes.
    • Achieved an improved dynamic range for driving Vpps (0.06 to 0.4 V and 0.23 to 0.4 V) below the 7% pre-forward error correction BER threshold (3.8 × 10⁻³).
    • Minimized nonlinear distortion and avoided SNR deterioration due to power competition.

    Conclusions:

    • The novel superposed 64QAM constellation effectively enhances performance in 2x2 MIMO VLC systems.
    • The use of geometrically shaped 8QAM constellations mitigates LED nonlinearity and improves system robustness.
    • The proposed scheme offers significant advantages in terms of BER and operational dynamic range.
