Summary
Virtual Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (VOSE) were developed during COVID-19 lockdowns. While commendable, VOSE may worsen existing ethnic and social inequalities in medical education, necessitating consideration of the home environment for equitable assessments.
Area of Science:
- Medical Education
- Clinical Assessment
Background:
- COVID-19 pandemic necessitated a shift from traditional face-to-face Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs).
- Virtual OSCEs (VOSEs) emerged as a response to lockdown restrictions, as experienced by medical students at University College London.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the development and implementation of VOSEs.
- To critically analyze the potential impact of VOSEs on existing inequalities within medical education.
Main Methods:
- Discussion of the VOSE development and implementation process.
- Analysis of potential exacerbation of ethnic and social inequalities in medical education.
Main Results:
- VOSEs were promptly developed and delivered in response to pandemic-related disruptions.
- Concerns raised that VOSEs may widen ethnic and social disparities in medical education.
Conclusions:
- While VOSEs offer a viable alternative during crises, their potential to exacerbate inequalities must be addressed.
- Future assessments should consider the home environment to promote a level playing field for all medical students.

Resistance
5.1K
When a current moves through any conductor, the conductor causes some level of difficulty for the current to flow. The measure of that difficulty is known as the resistance of the material and is represented by R. Every material has its own resistance. In the case of conductors, heat is emitted whenever a current passes through them. Resistance depends on the resistivity of the material. Resistivity is a characteristic of the material used to fabricate electrical components, whereas the...

Variation
7.4K
An important characteristic of any set of data is the variation in the data. In some data sets, the data values are concentrated closely near the mean; in other data sets, the data values are more widely spread out from the mean. The most common measure of variation, or spread, is the standard deviation, which is the square root of variance.

Vebe Test
276
The Vebe test is a method used to measure the workability of concrete, particularly effective for dry concrete mixes. This test employs a specific apparatus that includes a cylindrical chamber, a standard slump cone, and a transparent disc-shaped rider, all mounted on a vibrating table. The cylindrical chamber has dimensions of nine and a half inches in diameter and eight inches in height.
To conduct the test, concrete is placed into the slump cone. The concrete is filled in layers and...

Fermentation
123.5K
Most eukaryotic organisms require oxygen to survive and function adequately. Such organisms produce large amounts of energy during aerobic respiration by metabolizing glucose and oxygen into carbon dioxide and water. However, most eukaryotes can generate some energy in the absence of oxygen by anaerobic metabolism.
Fermentation is a type of metabolic process that occurs in the absence of oxygen, where organic molecules such as glucose are broken down to produce energy. During this process, the...
