Retinal thinning in phenylketonuria and Gaucher disease type 3

Retinal thinning in the nerve fiber, ganglion cell, and inner plexiform layers occurs in phenylketonuria (PKU) and Gaucher disease type 3 (GD3). These changes may relate to dopamine levels but are not reliable biomarkers for GD3 severity.

Conclusions:
- Both PKU and GD3 demonstrate retinal thinning in the NFL, GCL, and IPL, with OPL thickening.
- Reduced retinal dopamine concentrations may contribute to these observed changes.
- Current retinal measurements do not serve as reliable biomarkers for GD3 disease severity.
