Internet addiction in adolescents significantly disrupts nighttime sleep and increases daytime sleepiness. These sleep problems, including late bedtimes and frequent awakenings, require psychological intervention.
Area of Science:
- Sleep Medicine
- Adolescent Psychology
- Digital Health
Background:
- Internet addiction is a growing concern among adolescents.
- Sleep disturbances are frequently reported in individuals with addictive behaviors.
- The relationship between specific internet usage patterns and sleep quality requires further investigation.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the association between internet addiction, sleep quality, and daytime sleepiness in adolescents.
- To explore differences in sleep patterns based on the type of internet content consumed.
Main Methods:
- Cross-sectional observational study involving 4615 schoolchildren aged 12-18 in Central Siberia.
- Utilized validated questionnaires: Chen Internet Addiction Scale, Game Addiction Scale, Social Media Disorder Scale, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and Pediatric Daytime Sleepiness Scale.
- Assessed internet addiction, nighttime sleep parameters, and daytime sleepiness.
Main Results:
- Adolescents with internet addiction exhibit delayed sleep onset and wake times, reduced sleep duration, and increased sleep latency.
- Frequent nighttime awakenings and pronounced daytime sleepiness are characteristic of internet-addicted adolescents.
- Daytime sleepiness and nighttime awakenings showed the largest effect sizes, irrespective of content type.
Conclusions:
- Internet addiction is strongly linked to significant disturbances in nighttime sleep quality and excessive daytime sleepiness in adolescents.
- These findings highlight the need for targeted psychological interventions for internet-addicted adolescents experiencing sleep problems.
