Same-day sodium picosulfate/magnesium citrate (SPMC) bowel prep is as effective as split-dose for afternoon colonoscopy. This study found same-day preparation showed comparable or better bowel cleansing efficacy across multiple scales.
Area of Science:
- Gastroenterology
- Clinical Endoscopy
- Pharmacology
Background:
- Sodium picosulfate/magnesium citrate (SPMC) is a preferred small-volume bowel preparation agent.
- Limited data exists comparing same-day versus split-dose SPMC regimens for afternoon colonoscopies.
- Optimizing bowel preparation timing is crucial for colonoscopy efficacy.
Purpose of the Study:
- To compare the bowel cleansing efficacy of same-day versus split-dose SPMC preparations for afternoon colonoscopy.
- To evaluate the impact of colonoscopy timing (morning vs. afternoon) on bowel preparation quality.
Main Methods:
- A randomized, single-center, endoscopist-blinded, noninferiority study.
- Compared same-day (n=101) and split-dose (n=96) SPMC for afternoon colonoscopy.
- Assessed bowel cleansing using Aronchick Scale, Ottawa Bowel Preparation Scale (OBPS), Boston Bowel Preparation Scale (BBPS), and Bubble Scale.
Main Results:
- Both same-day and split-dose SPMC preparations demonstrated similar overall bowel cleansing efficacy.
- Same-day preparation showed a higher success rate (100% vs. 92.8%) on the Aronchick Scale.
- Same-day preparation achieved a better OBPS score (1.4 vs. 2.1), while BBPS scores were comparable (7.7 vs. 7.4).
Conclusions:
- Same-day SPMC preparation is non-inferior to split-dose preparation for afternoon colonoscopy.
- Same-day SPMC offers a viable and effective alternative for afternoon colonoscopy bowel preparation.
- Further research could explore patient preference and adherence for different SPMC timing regimens.
