Area of Science:

  • Medical Physics
  • Radiation Oncology
  • Medical Imaging

Background:

  • Brachytherapy workflows are complex and rely on manual processes.
  • Inaccurate quality assurance (QA) and applicator commissioning can lead to systematic treatment errors.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To introduce a novel automated system, the Iridium Imaging System for QA (IrIS-QA), for HDR 192Ir brachytherapy applicator commissioning.
  • To improve the accuracy and efficiency of applicator commissioning and daily QA procedures.

Main Methods:

  • Development of a 3D printed holder with an Imaging Panel (IP) for high-definition imaging.
  • Utilizing 192Ir gamma rays to acquire applicator projections and track source positions in real-time.
  • Time-resolved verification of dwell positions and dwell times with high resolution.

Main Results:

  • IrIS-QA measures dwell times with accuracy better than 0.1 s and interdwell distances with submillimetre precision.
  • Tested applicators demonstrated good agreement between planned and delivered dwell times and positions (deviations < 0.5 mm and < 1.3 mm).
  • Dwell time measurements showed agreement superior to 0.05 s, with minor deviations at the first dwell position.

Conclusions:

  • IrIS-QA is a compact, feature-rich system designed to enhance accuracy and efficiency in brachytherapy QA.
  • The system offers capabilities not found in existing commercial solutions.
  • IrIS-QA is proposed as a replacement for current clinical film dosimetry procedures.
