Experimental animal physiology related to brain stem control of wakefulness

Animal experiments indicate that the awake state is supported by activating structures in the caudal reticular core of the mesencephalon and in the caudolateral hypothalamus. Different aspects of the normal wakefulness may be mediated by separate neuronal subsystems. This segregation may explain why atypical combinations of symptoms may occur in head injured patients.
