Correlation between laboratory-based vicarious threat learning and emotional disorder symptom dimensions

Abnormal vicarious threat conditioning may increase emotional disorder risk. However, this study found weak correlations between threat learning and internalizing dimensions in university students, suggesting a less robust association than previously thought.
Area of Science:
- Psychology
- Clinical Psychology
- Neuroscience
Background:
- Vicarious threat conditioning abnormalities are theorized to increase vulnerability to emotional problems.
- Two models of non-specificity were tested: hypersensitivity to danger cues predicting a general internalizing dimension or specific symptom clusters.
Purpose of the Study:
- To examine university students' defensive responses during vicarious threat conditioning.
- To investigate the relationship between threat learning and internalizing dimensions (broad and specific).
Main Methods:
- 150 university students participated in a vicarious threat conditioning task.
- Defensive responses were measured through subjective reports and skin conductance.
- Correlations between threat learning and internalizing dimensions were analyzed.
Main Results:
- Vicarious conditioning was successful, with participants showing heightened responses to threatening stimuli.
- Individual differences in threat learning were not robustly correlated with any internalizing dimension.
- The findings suggest a weaker association between vicarious threat learning and emotional disorder risk than anticipated.
Conclusions:
- The link between vicarious threat learning and emotional disorder risk, whether broad or specific, appears weaker than previously believed in this student population.
- Limitations include the potential for high perceived threat of stimuli and the non-clinical nature of the sample.
- Future research should explore these associations in clinical populations.

Biological approach
The biological approach posits that internal, organic factors are the primary causes of such disorders. This perspective emphasizes brain structure and function, genetic predispositions, and neurotransmitter imbalances. For example, schizophrenia has been associated with both genetic...
