Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between a broad panel of circulating inflammatory markers and the risk of developing pancreatic cancer.
  • To identify potential biomarkers for early detection or risk stratification of pancreatic cancer.

Main Methods:

  • A case-cohort study was conducted within the Japan Public Health Center-based Prospective Study Cohort II.
  • Plasma concentrations of 62 inflammatory markers were measured in 774 participants, with 111 pancreatic cancer cases identified over 17 years.
  • Cox regression models were used to estimate hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for pancreatic cancer risk.

Main Results:

  • No statistically significant associations were found between the 62 examined inflammatory markers and pancreatic cancer risk after adjusting for multiple comparisons.
  • A suggestive, but not statistically significant after correction, association was observed for C-C motif ligand chemokine 8/monocyte chemoattractant protein 2 (CCL8/MCP2) (HR: 2.03, 95% CI: 1.05-3.93).

Conclusions:

  • The study did not identify significant associations between the investigated circulating inflammatory markers and pancreatic cancer risk.
  • The potential role of CCL8/MCP2 in pancreatic cancer warrants further research.
