Evaluation of PathTezt™, a Liquid-Based Cytology System

The PathTezt liquid-based Pap smear processor produces high-quality cervical cytology slides with excellent cellular fixation and morphology, proving effective for cervical cancer screening.

Background:
- Liquid-based preparation (LBP) cytology is widely adopted for cervical cancer screening due to its convenience and reliability.
- The PathTezt™ is a second-generation LBP system employing a filter-based concentration technique.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess the cellular fixation, morphology, smear quality, and diagnostic interpretability of cervical cytology specimens processed by the PathTezt liquid-based processor.
- Evaluate the performance of a novel liquid-based Pap smear system.
Main Methods:
- 400 cervical Pap smear samples were processed using the PathTezt 2000 processor.
- Slides were analyzed for sample adequacy, epithelial cell coverage, cellular distribution, obscuring factors, and cell fixation quality.
Main Results:
- 95.25% of samples were satisfactory for evaluation.
- Good cellular distribution (92%) and minimal inflammatory background (88.5%) were observed.
- High-quality fixation and a 99% overall performance rate were achieved.
Conclusions:
- The PathTezt liquid-based processor yields high-quality cervical cytology smears.
- Despite being a newer system, PathTezt demonstrates cost-effectiveness and reliable results for cervical cancer screening.
