Pharmacokinetics in Pediatric Patients: Overview and Drug Absorption

23
Understanding the physiological differences in the pediatric population is crucial for effective pharmacotherapy. Neonates, infants, and children exhibit significant variations in gastric pH, gastric emptying time, intestinal transit time, and biliary function. These variations profoundly affect oral drug absorption, necessitating a nuanced approach to pediatric dosing.Neonates present with a unique physiological profile, having a gastric pH greater than 4 and faster and more irregular gastric...

Inflammatory Bowel Disease III: Diagnostic Studies and Management I-Nutritional Therapy

451
Various diagnostic tests are employed in the diagnostic process for Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), particularly to differentiate between Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.
Diagnostic studies
A colonoscopy is the definitive screening test, distinguishing ulcerative colitis from other colon diseases with similar symptoms. During a colonoscopy test, inflamed mucosa with exudate ulcerations can be observed, and biopsies are taken to determine the histologic characteristics of the...

Carbohydrate Digestion00:57

Carbohydrate Digestion

118.8K
Carbohydrate digestion and metabolism break down simple and complex carbohydrates from food into saccharides (i.e., sugars) for the body to use as energy. Carbohydrate digestion starts in the mouth during mastication, or chewing. The masticated carbohydrates remain intact in the stomach. Digestion resumes in the duodenum of the small intestine, where pancreatic alpha-amylase and brush border enzymes of the microvilli convert complex carbohydrates to monosaccharides. Finally, the monosaccharides...

Bioavailability: Overview

3.3K
Bioavailability refers to the proportion of an unaltered drug that, after administration, enters the systemic circulation and can be distributed to the desired action site. Factors such as gastrointestinal (GI) absorption and liver biotransformation influence the bioavailability of a drug when it is administered orally. When a drug is administered intravenously, it enters the systemic circulation directly; by definition, its bioavailability is assumed to be 100%. The bioavailability of an...

Summary

Children often reject high-fiber foods. This study found that soft texture is key to liking, while fruit fillings decrease acceptance. Chocolate can improve liking of fiber-rich biscuits.

Area of Science:

  • Food Science
  • Sensory Analysis
  • Pediatric Nutrition

Background:

  • Dietary fiber intake is crucial for children's health, but high-fiber products face rejection.
  • Understanding sensory drivers of acceptance is vital for developing palatable high-fiber foods for children.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate children's acceptability of high-fiber biscuits.
  • To identify sensory properties influencing liking and disliking of these products.

Main Methods:

  • Quantitative descriptive analysis and instrumental texture analysis of eight commercial biscuits.
  • Evaluation of overall liking and preference by 110 Spanish children (6-12 years old).
  • Determination of moisture and water activity in relation to sensory properties.

Main Results:

  • Increased fiber content in biscuits correlated with harder, crispier, and chewier textures.
  • Soft texture was identified as the primary sensory driver of liking.
  • Chocolate-containing high- and medium-fiber biscuits were preferred by some children, despite harder textures.
  • Fruit fillings or pieces were identified as key drivers of disliking.

Conclusions:

  • Children's liking of biscuits is significantly influenced by texture, with softness being preferred.
  • Product formulation, such as incorporating chocolate, can enhance the acceptance of high-fiber biscuits.
  • Avoiding fruit fillings may improve the palatability of fiber-rich products for children.
