Tumor Immunotherapy01:27

Tumor Immunotherapy

731
Immunotherapy is a treatment that boosts or manipulates the immune system to fight diseases, including cancer. For instance, by stimulating an immune response through vaccinations against viruses that cause cancers, like hepatitis B virus and human papillomavirus, these diseases can be prevented. Nonetheless, some cancer cells can avoid the immune system due to their rapid mutation and division. The immune response to many cancers involves three phases: elimination, equilibrium, and escape.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Radiation Oncology

Background:

  • Photobiomodulation therapy (PBM) is an emerging treatment modality.
  • Radiotherapy is a cornerstone of cancer treatment.
  • Investigating novel strategies to enhance radiotherapy efficacy is crucial.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the safety of PBM in tumor treatment.
  • To assess PBM's potential as a radiosensitizer when combined with radiotherapy.

Main Methods:

  • In vitro studies using A431 cells assessed proliferation and cell cycle post-PBM.
  • Clonogenic assays and H2AX-gamma immunolabeling quantified DNA damage.
  • In vivo xenograft models utilized survival analysis, OCT, and histology.

Main Results:

  • PBM did not induce proliferation but increased the G2/M cell cycle fraction.
  • PBM enhanced radiotherapy's effect by 30% in clonogenic assays.
  • PBM-RT increased median survival by 4 days and promoted tumor necrosis, differentiation, and angiogenesis.

Conclusions:

  • PBM demonstrates potential as a safe and effective radiosensitizer.
  • The combination of PBM and radiotherapy offers a synergistic approach.
  • PBM's low cost and minimal training requirements make it an accessible option for enhancing cancer treatment.
