Recurrent kidney stones can stem from rare causes like parathyroid adenoma. Surgical removal of the adenoma (parathyroidectomy) effectively resolved the nephrolithiasis in a 35-year-old female patient.
Area of Science:
- Urology
- Endocrinology
- Nephrology
Background:
- Nephrolithiasis, or kidney stones, is a prevalent global urologic condition causing considerable morbidity.
- While multifactorial, certain endocrine disorders can uniquely contribute to renal stone formation.
Observation:
- A case report details a 35-year-old female experiencing recurrent kidney stones in a developing country.
- Diagnostic workup revealed primary hyperparathyroidism, specifically a parathyroid adenoma, as the underlying cause.
Findings:
- The parathyroid adenoma was identified as the primary etiology for the patient's recurrent nephrolithiasis.
- Surgical excision of the parathyroid adenoma (parathyroidectomy) was performed.
Implications:
- This case highlights parathyroid adenoma as a treatable, albeit rare, cause of nephrolithiasis.
- Successful parathyroidectomy led to complete recovery without complications, underscoring the importance of thorough etiological investigation.
