Area of Science:

  • Medical Education
  • Student Well-being
  • Social Psychology

Background:

  • Medical school can be socially isolating, negatively impacting academic performance and well-being, especially for underrepresented students.
  • There is a need for brief, low-burden interventions to support medical students' sense of belonging.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the effectiveness of the Build & Belong intervention in improving social belongingness among medical students.
  • To evaluate changes in social isolation, connectedness, and assurance using a peer-to-peer approach.

Main Methods:

  • A longitudinal observational study piloted the Build & Belong intervention at a US medical school.
  • The intervention involved senior students creating and sharing reflective videos on belonging with junior students.
  • Surveys measured social isolation, connectedness, and assurance before and after the intervention.

Main Results:

  • Social isolation scores significantly decreased post-intervention (p < .001).
  • Black/African American students showed the largest reduction in social isolation (M Δ = -7.24, p = .010).
  • While social assurance and connectedness did not significantly change, students resonated with peer-delivered messages.

Conclusions:

  • The Build & Belong intervention effectively reduces social isolation among medical students.
  • This peer-based strategy is a promising, scalable, and cost-effective method to enhance student belonging.
  • Peer delivery is a trusted method for sharing strategies to navigate medical school challenges.
