Peptic Ulcer Disease III: Clinical Manifestations and Diagnostic Studies01:28

Peptic Ulcer Disease III: Clinical Manifestations and Diagnostic Studies

234
Peptic ulcer disease (PUD) presents with diverse symptoms depending on the location and severity of the ulcer. Clinical manifestations of peptic ulcer include dull pain and a burning sensation in the mid-epigastric region.
Few clinical manifestations differentiate gastric ulcers from duodenal ulcers. Distinctions in the location, timing, and pain relief are crucial for healthcare providers in differentiating between gastric and duodenal ulcers during clinical assessments.

Rheumatic Heart Disease II: Clinical Manifestations and Diagnostic Studies

The key clinical manifestations of Rheumatic heart disease (RHD) include several distinct cardiac symptoms.Carditis, a hallmark of acute rheumatic fever, involves inflammation of the heart's endocardium, myocardium, and pericardium. Chronic RHD often results from recurrent episodes of carditis. Its symptoms include the following:Murmurs are caused by valvular damage, especially to the mitral and aortic valves. Mitral stenosis or regurgitation is common, with characteristic heart murmurs...

Summary

Pemphigus is linked to physical and mental conditions. This study found that cancer and autoimmune/inflammatory skin diseases may trigger pemphigus, suggesting they could be early warning signs.

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Autoimmune Diseases
  • Oncology

Background:

  • Pemphigus is associated with various physical and psychological comorbidities.
  • Understanding these comorbidities is crucial for comprehensive patient management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the associations between pemphigus and comorbidities.
  • To analyze comorbidity patterns based on demographics, disease severity, and diagnostic delay.

Main Methods:

  • A case-control study involving 163 pemphigus patients and 8 age/sex-matched controls per patient.
  • Univariate and multivariate conditional regression models were used to identify associated comorbidities.
  • Sensitivity analyses were performed, excluding patients with paraneoplastic pemphigus.

Main Results:

  • Key comorbidities at diagnosis included cardiovascular diseases, hyperlipidemia, autoimmune thyroid diseases, autoimmune/inflammatory dermatoses, and cancer.
  • Multivariate analysis revealed independent associations between pemphigus and cancer, and autoimmune/inflammatory dermatoses.
  • These associations remained significant even after excluding patients with paraneoplastic pemphigus.

Conclusions:

  • Cancer and autoimmune/inflammatory dermatoses may act as potential triggers for pemphigus.
  • These conditions should be considered as early warning signs for pemphigus development.
