Community engagement in cervical cancer prevention is vital in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Leveraging community networks and existing structures effectively addresses disparities and improves screening for cervical cancer.
Area of Science:
- Public Health
- Oncology
- Community-Based Research
Background:
- Cervical cancer is a leading cause of cancer mortality among African women.
- Screening, early detection, and treatment are evidence-based interventions.
- Community-based participatory research (CBPR) has reduced disparities in the US, but its use in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is unclear.
Purpose of the Study:
- To highlight community engagement in cervical cancer prevention and control in SSA.
- To describe current community engagement efforts.
- To identify best practices for community engagement in cervical cancer prevention and control.
Main Methods:
- A comprehensive literature search was conducted across multiple databases (PubMed, Embase, CINHAL, AJOL, African Index Medicus-WHO) until June 8, 2020.
- Screening of 620 titles/abstracts and review of 56 full-text articles.
- 9 articles meeting inclusion criteria were selected for narrative synthesis.
Main Results:
- Nine articles published between 2005-2019 reported research from Ghana, Kenya, Zambia, Senegal, South Africa, and Nigeria.
- Research primarily occurred in rural settings, targeting women aged 15-65.
- Utilizing community health workers, religious organizations, traditional leaders, and educational institutions increased cervical cancer awareness. Integrating research within social structures and training community members showed promise.
Conclusions:
- Novel community-based approaches can address cervical cancer disparities in SSA.
- Community engagement in research benefits both researchers and communities.
- This review provides valuable insights for future efforts to reduce cervical cancer disparities in SSA.
