Summary

This study shows that muscle tissue exhibits nonlinear elastic behavior. A strain-dependent Young's modulus model accurately describes muscle stiffness under large deformations, while a linear model precisely captures initial behavior.

Area of Science:

  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Soft Tissue Mechanics
  • Medical Imaging

Background:

  • Elastography estimates soft tissue stiffness using Young's modulus, assuming linear elasticity.
  • Soft tissues, however, display nonlinear elastic behavior under large deformations.
  • Accurate characterization requires models that account for strain-dependent mechanical properties.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To characterize the ex vivo mechanical response of two mouse muscle types to external force.
  • To evaluate the performance of a strain-dependent Young's modulus (SYM) model for large deformations.
  • To assess a recursive linear model for capturing the initial linear elastic region of muscle tissue.

Main Methods:

  • Uniaxial compression tests were performed on muscle samples under force control.
  • Stress-strain (σ-ε) curves were generated to analyze mechanical response.
  • The strain-dependent Young's modulus (SYM) and a recursive linear model were applied to the data.

Main Results:

  • Both muscle types demonstrated a strain hardening effect.
  • The SYM model effectively fitted the entire stress-strain curves of the muscles.
  • The recursive linear model accurately identified the initial linear region of deformation.

Conclusions:

  • Muscle tissue exhibits significant nonlinear elastic behavior, including strain hardening.
  • The SYM model provides a comprehensive description of muscle mechanical response across large deformations.
  • A linear model is precise for the initial deformation region, relevant for some elastography applications.
